Exploring LGBTQIA+ Histories and Futures with Zines

Exploring LGBTQIA+ Histories and Futures with Zines

Join us at 64 Harvard on Saturday, September 9th at 3 pm for a community workshop on zines, with Elon University Archivist/Zine Lesbrarian Libby Coyner and Philosophy Professor Lauren Guilmette. In this workshop, we will talk about some history of zines, highlight some favorite queer and trans zines, and give you an opportunity to make zines in community with us! We will provide all of the basic supplies for zine-making, including paper, scissors, glue sticks, ephemera and magazines for cut+paste/collage, and washi tape. Please bring along any photos/images/poetry you’d like to meditate on for your zine!

Zines are self-published, self-distributed publications, and have been used for decades as a method for sharing queer and trans stories, disseminating information among activist communities, and writing magical LGBTQIA+ futures. They're DIY and can combine image, text, photographs, art, cut/paste, or any combination! Zines are created in both analog and digital spaces, and are created out of a desire to share a story or message, not for profit. They come from a long history of feminist, queer, anarcho-punk traditions that help folx in the margins reclaim their own means of production in storytelling!
